Series: Funes’ Broken Mirror

Title: I Don’t Know If It Even Exists- In The Dark
Year: 2019
Medium: installation | video projection, photograph documentation
Dimension: variable
Location: MASS MoCA campus, USA

During my residency at Studios at MASS MoCA, I used a short-throw projector to blow up the imagery of two 2017 video works, Supporting Memories and RAM-Tetraeder: Steam, and project them onto the building surfaces of a large raw space in the MASS MoCA campus. I employed video projection as a tool to modify the architectural structures and create another dimension that only exists when the video projection agitates, collides, and mediates between our perceptions and the architecture itself.

As part of series entitled Funes’ Broken Mirror, inspired by Jorge Luis Borges’ short story Funes the Memorious, I envision myself in Funes’ mind, reimagining how those glimpses of moments would look and feel during one of his sleepless nights.

My residency at the Studios at MASS MoCA was supported by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government, Taiwan.

For the final onsite presentation, I asked the audience to wear emergency blankets made of Mylar, without their jackets underneath, if they wanted to enter the space to view my video installations. I invited them to re-experience my physical sensations while creating the installation in the dark and cold space.
